GEORGE TOWN, Jan 27 — An air-conditioning technician on a routine servicing job at a shoplot on Jalan Tun Dr Awang here got a rude surprise when he stumbled upon a plastic bag full of grenades and ammunition in the unit’s air well.
Shamsudin Suzani, 62, said he saw the plastic bag on a ledge in the air well while he was servicing the unit’s air conditioner at around 9pm last night.
“I picked it up and had roughly dropped it on a table to be thrown away later without looking inside it,” he said when contacted today.
But later, his curiosity over the contents of the heavy plastic bag finally spurred him to open it up.
He was shocked to find that it was filled with hand grenades and magazines of live bullets.
“I was shocked and terrified, but I was also thankful to Allah that it did not explode when I roughly dropped it on the table,” he said.
He said he called the police then and a bomb disposal unit arrived at the scene to retrieve the plastic bag of explosives and ammunition that included 70 units of M16 bullets.
Northeast district police chief ACP Mior Farid Alathrash said the case is being investigated under Section 8 of The Firearms Act 1972.
