KUALA LUMPUR, Dec 25 — Investigations into the death of two Bangladeshi workers at an LRT extension project site has begun, LRT line operator Prasarana Group confirmed today.
Director for project development, Datuk Zohari Sulaiman said investigations on the cause of the incident are underway, where the scaffolding and formwork that the duo were working on collapsed during the concreting of the deck slab.
“We sincerely regret the unfortunate incident and would extend a helping hand to the family of both workers.
“We also appreciate the support and assistance from the Fire and Rescue Services Department, the police, and medical officers and rescuers from the hospital and the local authority in the search and rescue mission,” Zohari said in a statement.
Prasarana joined today project management consultant Opus-Ace Vector Consortium, detailed design consultant and supervising engineer HSS Integrated Sdn Bhd, and the contractor of the Kampung Kuala Sungai Baru Depot Fajarbaru Builder Group Bhd promising to cooperate with the authorities to investigate the incident.
Officers from the Fire and Rescue Services Department recovered the first body at the worksite at 10pm yesterday, while the second body was recovered at 1.15am this morning, according to the statement.
“The search and rescue mission was called off at 1.45am, when the contractor confirmed that two other workers who were initially unaccounted for, were found unharmed after further checks.
“Four other workers had minor injuries and were given outpatient treatment earlier,” the statement said.
Yesterday, Prasarana said the 8m high scaffolding that collapsed during the concreting of the deck slab was designed by a professional engineer and certified safe by a certified scaffolding inspector.
Yesterday’s collapse is the latest to hit the LRT Line Extension Project (LEP), plagued by several cases of falling structures including one fatal incident.
Last March last year, a man was killed when a 10-tonne piece of construction equipment fell from a crane used for the LRT extension and crushed his car along Jalan Lapangan Terbang Subang.
In June this year, two people were hurt when a metal beam fell from a crane and onto their vehicle.
Construction of the Putra Heights terminal began in 2011 as a part of the LEP, which involves additions to the existing Ampang and Kelana Jaya LRT network.
The Sri Petaling and Kelana Jaya stations are expected to be extended to Putra Heights, which will be featured as “an integrated station” where the two lines meet.
According Prasarana, the extension to the Ampang line — which passes through residential and commercial areas in Bukit Jalil, Bandar Kinrara, Puchong, Kampung Sri Aman and Putra Heights — will be extended for 18.1km.
Meanwhile, the Kelana Jaya line will stretch to cover another 17.4km passing through Lembah Subang, Subang Jaya, USJ and Putra Heights.
