KUALA LUMPUR, Nov 22 — After being embroiled with internal issues for years, the Malaysian Ex-Police Association (PBPM) is now officially recognised by the Registrar of Society (RoS), new President Datuk Dr Hassan Yusoff announced today.
According to the letter from RoS sighted by Malay Mail Online, the registrar said it was satisfied with PBPM’s explanation regarding its internal problems and allegations contained in complaints lodged against the association as well as with the rectifications.
“Previously there were a few presidents but from October 3, there is only one president. And these are the highest supreme council that drafts policies.
“So I look forward to the future growth of the association and the growth of mental and physical discipline of our men, 150,000 to come,” he told reporters at the Dynasty Hotel.
PBPM, which has 110,000 members, is one of the 32 associations for former policemen.
Hassan said among PBPM’s long-term goals are uniting and strengthening retired policemen groups so that they will have strength in numbers.
He also said that PBPM will set up membership bureaus at the central, state and district levels to recruit 40,000 members in two years’ time.
“This is achievable because there are 200,000 former policemen in this country,” he said.
The former police officer also said PBPM will reach out to the government and ask for more assistance for the retired policemen, such as aid for housing, resources for business opportunities as well as an increase in retirees’ pension.
He pointed retired military personnel fared much better in terms of aid and welfare programmes.
“We don’t even have Hari Pahlawan, they have Perhebat (the Ex-Armed Forces Affairs Corporation), they have so many things,” he lamented, referring to the day the nation remembers and pays tribute to members of security forces who have died in the line of duty.
