KUALA LUMPUR, Nov 5 — Tens of thousands of summonses are expected to be issued nationwide within the first two weeks of the Road Transport Department’s (RTD) clampdown on high-intensity discharge (HID) headlamps and strobe lights, and non-conforming number plates.

RTD director-general Datuk Seri Ismail Ahmad said 1,574 summonses were issued nationwide in the first two days of the special operation launched by the RTD, the Land and Public Transport Commission (SPAD) and the police on Saturday.

An offender caught during the operation is issued a PG1 ticket on top of a summons, which requires the vehicle to be brought back to the RTD for inspection within 10 days.

Only after the inspection is completed satisfactorily will the offender be able to pay the fine.

Failure to return for the inspection will result in an uncleared summons which will see the offender being called to court to face a possible fine of up to RM2,000 after two months.

Should the offender fail to show up in court, an arrest warrant would be issued and the offender blacklisted by the RTD.

The authorities have identified 100 locations throughout the country to conduct regular roadblocks.

“The number of fines is expected to reach the tens of thousands by the second week,” Ismail said.

“The results are much higher than previous initiatives because we are doing a nationwide sweep.”

Johor had the highest number of summonses issued (356) while Perlis has not snagged any offenders so far.

The final date for the operation has not been set but Ismail said it would include excessive window tints in six months.

Ismail also provided an update on Ops Lebih Muatan, which aims to catch overloaded lorries and trucks on the road.

He said 21,709 summonses had been been issued since September 1.

He said the operations were being conducted to reduce accidents, which claimed more than 6,000 lives last year.

“No one likes to get a summons but what we do is for the good of the people,” he said.

“We hope to get the public’s full cooperation.”
