GEORGE TOWN, Aug 22 — A family of three MH17 victims want them to be laid to rest in Penang once all of their remains are found and repatriated, pushing back the prospect of closure.
The family members of the victims - Tan Siew Poh, Loh Yan Hwa and Fan Shun Poh - want them to be brought back to Penang as their final resting place.
“It is the family’s wishes that all three of their remains be brought back to Malaysia together,” Penang Chief Minister Lim Guan Eng said in his speech at a ceremony in Komtar held in honour of those who perished on MH17 this morning.
Tan was travelling with her daughter, Loh, and son-in-law, Fan, to Penang from Amsterdam when the Malaysian Airlines flight MH17 was shot out of the skies over the troubled Crimean region of Eastern Ukraine on July 17.
“Although Fan is not Malaysian, the family said he had always expressed his desire to retire in Penang so his remains, once identified, will be laid to rest in Penang with his wife (Loh) and mother-in-law (Tan), both of whom were Penangites,” Lim said.
Only Loh’s remains have been found but will stay in Amsterdam until Tan and Fan’s remains can be discovered and identified.
A total of 283 passengers and 15 crew were killed when flight MH17 was shot down on July 17.
