PETALING JAYA, June 25 ― The Selangor Islamic Religious Council (MAIS) has handed over all the Bibles in the Malay language and Iban versions which were confiscated from the Malaysian Bible Association (PBM) last January to the Deputy Public Prosecutor (DPP) for further action.
MAIS chairman Datuk Mohamad Adzib Mohd Isa said he had written to the DPP on the matter in line with the command of the Sultan of Selangor, Sultan Sharafuddin Idris Shah and suggestion of the Attorney-General, Tan Sri Abdul Gani Patail earlier.
Last week, Sultan Sharafuddin commanded that MAIS resolved the issue on the confiscation of the Bibles according to the existing legislation.
Abdul Gani meanwhile announced that the Attorney-General's Chambers would not prosecute anyone with regard to the seizure of the Bibles and the case had been closed.
Mohamad Adzib said MAIS abided by the decision of the Attorney-General and now handed over the Bibles to the DPP to find the best solution.
“Actually, we have the right to dispose the bibles on our own. But because we give priority to justice and harmony, we have returned them to the DPP to be brought back to the court according to procedure,” he said when closing the National Level Convention on Empowering the Ummah 2014, here today.
On January 2, JAIS raided the PBM office at Damansara Kim, here and seized 300 copies of the Bible in Bahasa Melayu and Iban language in a move to prevent the use of the word “Allah” in the Bible which it claimed had contravened the enactment. ― Bernama
