GEORGE TOWN, March 7 — Penang can be “game changer” that propels Malaysia forward, Chief Minister Lim Guan Eng said today on the eve of Pakatan Rakyat’s sixth anniversary as the state administration.

Lim said this will only be the case if it was willing to cultivate an environment that will allow it “win the future” for the generations to come.

“Penang can only win the future for our children by investing in public infrastructure, building human talent, sustainable policies, reducing inequality, good and clean governance,” he said.

Acknowledging that the state has seen major changes in recent years, including the newly opened RM4.5 billion second bridge and the newly refurbished RM250 million Penang International Airport, he pointed out that Penang still managed to be “cleaner, greener, safer and healthier”.

He pointed out that the state government also came up with new policies that stressed on reduction of red tape, free and fair competition, divestment of non-core businesses and human capital development.

Lim also held up the state’s success in implementing its various environmentally-friendly programmes such as the no free plastic bag ruling, car free Sundays and the state holds the record with the highest recycling rate of 26 per cent in the country.

“These successes can only be sustained with a budget-based administration that deals with leakages such as corruption and wastages, and also an outcome-based administration that focuses on projects bringing positive impact to the people,” he said.
