GEORGE TOWN, March 6 — DAP’s Teresa Kok today alleged that an egg-filled handshake she received last night was part of a campaign incubated on Facebook.

Pointing out a Facebook account operated under the name “Mamluk Qalawun”, Kok said a challenge was issued yesterday “all Penang youths” to “bagi salam” (greet) Kok when she attended a ceramah organised by the Malaysian Young People’s Solidarity (SAMM) and Permatang Pauh PAS Youth.

“It is obviously pre-planned and we have been very cautious after hearing about it, and we had received messages that I will be attacked last night,” she told the Malay Mail Online in a telephone interview.

Rejecting allegations by Penang Opposition leader Datuk Jahara Hamid that Pakatan Rakyat (PR) had staged the whole incident for publicity,  Kok said the Facebook posting is evidence enough that the incident was premeditated by rivals.

“Even the erroneous news alert by Umno-owned Utusan Malaysia alleging that I had been slapped last night showed that they are indirectly encouraging people to openly attack me,” she said. 

After Kok gave a 30-minute talk at the ceramah in Permatang Pauh last night, a man had approached in a friendly manner as if to shake her hands.

When Kok extended her hand, the man had smashed the egg in her hand and walked off.

Angry PR members at the site had stopped the man and handed him over to policemen on duty there.

Commenting on the incident this afternoon, Jahara told a press conference that she believed the egg incident was staged by PR’s own people to create publicity.

Kok has been embroiled in controversy since the release of her Chinese-language “Onederful Malaysia” Chinese New Year video clip was accused of insulting the Malays, the Muslims and the country’s armed forces.

Last month, a coalition of Muslim non-governmental organisations in Kuala Lumpur offered a RM1,200 reward to anyone who recorded themselves slapping her for allegedly insulting the Malays and Islam.

On February 19, red paint was splashed at her service centre in Kuala Lumpur and a dead chicken was left on the doorstep of the premises.

Despite the threats against her, Kok said she will continue on with her life as usual.

“I will continue to go to ceramah when I’m invited to attend; how can I not go to ceramah especially with the Kajang by-election coming up?” she asked, adding that she has another ceramah lined up tonight at Kota Baru.

However, she said she will now be more cautious, as will organisers that invite her to speak at their ceramah.

Bukit Mertajam MP Steven Sim, who witnessed the incident last night, said both he and Kok were stunned when it happened.

He criticised Jahara for makingthe accusation when she should be showing support for a fellow female politician facing political bullying from fanatics.

“This is disappointing that Jahara as a senior leader and state opposition leader could stage such an accusation when she should be more mature, “ he said when contacted.

He said Jahara should be condemning the bout of extremism in recent times instead of blaming the victim.

“This is not surprising as previously state Umno wanita chief Senator Norliza Abdul Rahim justified the “reward to slap” against Kok so this confirms what I have said before that Umno is consciously breeding fanatics in order to prolong their regime,” he said.

He demanded that Jahara apologise to Kok and all women in Malaysia for issuing such an unbecoming accusation.
