SHAH ALAM, Dec 2 — An Immigration officer was sentenced to five years’ jail and fined RM20,000 or another 12 months’ imprisonment by the Sessions Court here today for accepting bribes amounting to RM5,000 between July and October this year.
Nik Azan Nik Man, 31, admitted receiving RM800 from Abdullah Busahlan as an inducement to refrain from taking action against two individuals named Hendrawan and Amrizal who did not have valid travel documents.
He committed the offence in a toilet at the low cost carrier terminal in Sepang at 2.30 pm on Aug 28 this year.
Nik Azan also admitted receiving RM1,850 and RM2,350 from Abdullah through his CIMB account.
He committed the offences at Petronas JML Damai, Persiaran Anggerik Mokara, Taman Kota Kemuning, Shah Alam at 9.04 pm on July 31 and Petronas Malaysia Airport Niaga KLIA 3, Jalan Pekeliling Kargo in Sepang at 11.19 am on Oct 31 respectively.
Mitigating for a lenient sentence, Nik Azan expressed remorse for his actions and told the court he had a wife and a young child to support.
However, deputy public prosecutor Kevin Morais asked the court to impose a deterrent sentence saying the accused was a public servant who had been entrusted to safeguard the security of the country and public interest.
Judge M Bakri Abd Majid acknowledged that Nik Azan had saved the court’s time by pleading guilty but said he had to weigh public interest in view of the increasing number of foreigners entering the country illegally and the rising crime rate. — Bernama
