KUALA LUMPUR, Nov 8 — MIC strategic director S. Vell Paari’s decision to not contest for the vice-president’s post or a central working committee (CWC) seat in the party’s elections has raised eyebrows.
Vell Paari, the son of former MIC supremo Datuk Seri S. Samy Vellu, said he wants to be judged on merit.
“Both the vice-president and CWC seats are important party positions and I feel I must prove myself worthy of contesting for a position,” said Vell Paari.
“Winning is not a problem for me as most of the division chairmen have pledged to vote me.”
Vell Paari, had in July, announced he would stand for the vice-presidents’ post at the MIC elections after being ousted from the CWC.
“I have just become the Kepong division chairman and must prove my capability.
“I want to take the next step to attend to the social, economic and political agenda of MIC members.”
He said there were no other reasons for him to drop out.
“The president (Datuk Seri G. Palanivel) was not happy initially but I told him what I wanted and he agreed,” said Vell Paari.
He plans to set up a membership management unit to look after the needs of MIC members.
“It is my way of repaying the party and its members for everything I have in my life.”
The looming MIC elections have received much attention.
Among those who declared their intention to contest for the three vice-president posts include former MIC vice-president Datuk S. Sothinathan, Deputy Youth and Sports
Minister Datuk M. Saravanan, Perak Speaker Datuk Seri SK Devamany, former MIC Youth chief Datuk SA Vigneswaran, Datuk S. Balakrishnan from Johor, MIC treasurer-general Datuk Jaspal Singh and MIC Youth chief Datuk T. Mohan.
Nominations for the deputy presidency, vice-presidency and 23 CWC posts are set for November 16 while the elections will be held on November 30.
