KEPONG, Oct 31 — A job in the park ought to be a relaxing affair.
However, regulars at Taman Metropolitan park regard their evening runs a horrifying experience as motorcyclists have taken over their lanes.
The joggers say they have to keep watching their backs to avoid being hit by motorbikes.
Chong Meng, who cycles regularly at the park, says he was once hit by a biker.
“The motorcyclist crashed into my bicycle because he was distracted by a girl,” he says.
The rider was unapologetic and was not able to provide his licence.
“They are a menace especially to children who often play kites.
“Something has to be done to prevent accidents.”
Lakbir Singh says City Hall needs to ensure enforcement officers who patrol the park take their job seriously as motorcyclists and even cars have been spotted on the jogging lanes.
“The officers are not doing anything to stop them.
“If City Hall claims it has enforcement officers patrolling the area, why is it that we only see them in the park for a maximum of two hours everyday?”
Choong Heng Chong, who walks in the park everyday, says the people there are afraid of getting mugged or robbed by unscrupulous individuals on motorbikes.
“Teenagers are the ones who often ride their bikes here. We fear for our safety as they can rob us and ride away easily,” said Choong.
Shamala Devi, who brings her daughter to fly kites everyday after school, says City Hall should place specific signages to prevent motorcyclists from entering the park.
“Currently, we only have ‘no bicycles allowed’ signages in certain areas of the park and this may confuse the motorcyclists,” she says.
