KUALA LUMPUR, Sept 27 — The MCA extraordinary general meeting (EGM) has been overtaken by events and the 21-day notice can no longer be given to the new set of delegates.
Former party Youth chief Datuk Dr Wee Ka Siong said if the letters for the EGM were issued today they would be null and void.
“The EGM has to be conducted within 30 days after the petition was filed on Sept 9 and a 21-day notice sent to all central delegates,” he told reporters at parliament lobby yesterday.
“Since MCA was holding its divisional elections on Sept 22, this is no longer possible.
“It was the hope of those who filed the petition that party president Datuk Seri Dr Chua Soi Lek would use his power to shorten the period to call for the EGM to seven days but he refused.”
Wee said there was nothing they could do now.
“We were only able to send the petition on Sept 9 because the central committee lifted Datuk Tee Siew Keong’s suspension on Sept 5,” he said.
“We acted as fast as we could to express our unhappiness.”
He said there was no way they could have filed the petition earlier because that would have meant pre-empting the decision of the central committee.
On Sept 9, MCA deputy president Datuk Seri Liow Tiong Lai and 13 other central committee members handed a petition calling for an EGM to reinstate Tee’s suspension by the central committee.
Tee had gone against party orders by accepting a post in the Johor exco.
Wee said the decision to file another petition to call for an EGM now rested with Liow but felt they should just wait for the party election.
