GEORGE TOWN, Sept 6 — Penang Perkasa today urged Indah Water Konsortium (IWK) to review its flushing toilet sewerage charges which had increased by five fold since July.
Perkasa state chief Mohd Rizuad Mohd Azudin said it used to cost only RM48 to pump sewage but the new rates were RM230 for under 2.5 cubic metres and RM360 for anything above.
"We have received many complaints from residents, especially those living in the rural areas saying their septic tanks overflowed frequently due to rain and had to be pumped once a month," he told reporters here today.
He said the drastic increase should not affect homeowners with individual septic tanks, especially in the villages, as most of them were from the low-income group.
"It’s not fair because those who live in apartments or commercial building owners, pay lower fees and only every six months," he said.
He expressed concern following a meeting with some villagers around Balik Pulau and Teluk Bahang who aimed to pump their own tanks and discard the sewage into drains and rivers if the matter was not resolved. — Bernama
