TANAH MERAH, Aug 23 — Four friends were killed when the car they were travelling in collided with a four-wheel-drive (4WD) vehicle at KM54.5 Jalan Machang-Jeli near the intersection at Kampung Bechah Laut in Machang today.
In the 4.40am incident, Fauzairi Mohammad, 22, who was at the wheel of a Kancil car and heading towards Machang from Jeli, lost control of the wheel, causing the vehicle to skid and veered into the path of an oncoming Toyota Hilux driven by former Kuala Besut Assemblyman Datuk Nik Muhammad Zawawi Salleh, 46.
Tanah Merah district police chief DSP Abdul Aziz Mahmud said Fauzairi, from Kampung Wakaf Beta in Machang, and two of his passengers, Muhammad Fakhrunizam Ibrahim, 19, and Mohamad Hafiz Hakimi Mohamed, 24, both from Kampung Ka’abah, also in Machang, died on the spot in the crash.
The other passenger in the car, Muhammad Noranas Nordin, 20, from Kampung Wakaf Bata, died during treatment at Tanah Merah Hospital, he told reporters at the Tanah Merah district police headquarters here today.
He said the four victims, who sustained head and body injuries, were trapped in their seats and firemen had to be called to extricate them from the wreckage.
The driver of the 4WD escaped unhurt in the crash, he added. – Bernama
