BUKIT MERTAJAM, Aug 19 — Lim Guan Eng denied today that he had accused former Penang Barisan Nasional (BN) chairman Teng Chang Yeow of taking the RM500,000 promised to a temple here.
Instead, The Penang Chief Minister told a press conference this morning that he had merely asked Teng what happened to the funds promised by BN during the general election.
“I did not accuse him of taking the money, I only said why he did not deliver on his promise made during the elections,” Lim said.
The DAP secretary-general claimed that he was merely questioning Teng on behalf of the temple as BN should fulfil the promises it made.
Last night, Teng reportedly told the vernacular Chinese papers that he may consider taking legal action against Lim and the Chinese papers for allegedly insinuating that he had taken the RM500,000.
He was responding to an earlier statement by Lim questioning why Teng delivered on the promised allocation, which was meant to go for the construction of temple's multi-purpose hall at Jalan Bukit Tengah here.
“I did not say he took the money, if the Chinese papers wrote that, then he should take action against them, not me,” Lim said today.
He added that Teng is the one who had promised to give the funds to the temple and failed to keep his promise.
“Now, he wants to sue me for questioning why he failed to keep his promise. If he wants to sue me for this, go ahead,” Lim said.
The Ang San King Temple, believed to be 134 years old, needed the funds to complete the project that costs a total RM1.6 million.
