JOHOR BARU, Aug 17 — A house at Taman Sri Putri in Skudai was set on fire by a group of thieves last night in an attempt to wipe out any trace of an apparent heist.
The thieves had managed to haul over RM90,000 worth of jewellery and cash from the house before torching it at about 4 p.m. on Thursday.
According to the Star report, retiree Poh Qing Fei, 60, said that he, his ex-wife and son were not at home when the thieves struck. Poh was visiting his brother in Muar when the incident took place, and was informed of the fire by his younger brother who lives nearby.
Poh said that he was shocked to see his house almost completely burnt when he arrived at the scene and confirmed that RM50,000 worth of jewellery was stolen following an inspection that had taken place.
Johor Baru North deputy OCPD Supt Beh Eng Lai said police were investigating the case. Supt Beh informed that the police suspect the thieves burnt down the house to cover their tracks. He added that the case had been classified as burglary, besides causing mischief by fire or explosive substance with intent to destroy a house under the Penal Code.
