BEAVERTON (Oregon), July 1 — An independently owned card shop in Beaverton, Oregon, has suspended its Yu‑Gi‑Oh tournaments for a week after receiving multiple complaints and negative reviews about players’ poor hygiene.

According to IGN, Chronos Games & Gifts announced the temporary halt in a statement posted on its public Discord channel, saying it had faced recurring issues with “mistreating the restrooms” and customers turning up in unclean condition. The shop urged players to follow Konami’s official tournament guidelines, which include hygiene requirements and allow attendees to report individuals who fail to comply.

Konami introduced explicit hygiene rules in 2019, stating that all tournament participants and spectators must be “clean and wear clean clothing” or risk penalties. The Yu‑Gi‑Oh Tournament Guide notes that neglecting basic self‑care can create an unpleasant environment, especially during long, crowded events, and that players may be asked to correct the issue to continue competing.

Chronos Games & Gifts’ decision has drawn support from local players who say the move helps maintain a comfortable atmosphere at the venue.

Similar reminders have surfaced in other communities. In 2025, the Nebraska Pokémon Organized Play Facebook page reiterated hygiene expectations outlined in the official Play! Pokémon Tournament Rules Handbook, which allows organisers to request participants to update their attire or hygiene, and to remove those who refuse to comply.

The Oregon shop’s stance has since gone viral, highlighting ongoing efforts within trading card game communities to enforce basic standards of cleanliness at organised play events.
