SINGAPORE, June 29 — Zouk announced yesterday that it has signed a new lease for a 30,000 sq ft space in Clarke Quay in Singapore.
The Straits Times quoted the Singapore superclub as saying in a press release that it is targeting to complete its relocation from Jiak Kim Street by September next year.
It said it is giving “provision for delays in renovations and other administrative matters for the superclub to operate at its new premises”.
Zouk intends to invest S$10 million (RM28 million) in its new space at Block C at The Cannery in Clarke Quay, the newspaper added.
In the past, the lot has been occupied by nightspots like Fenix Room, Ministry of Sound and Zirca.
Clarke Quay, which is owned by CapitaLand Mall Trust and managed by CapitaLand Mall Asia, said in a news release later in the day that Zouk’s new space is targeted for a June 2016 opening.
In a separate statement, Zouk founder Lincoln Cheng said, “We are happy that Zouk has found a new home to move to, where it will continue its legacy for the next generation.
“We’ve considered every potential venue carefully — from its location and accessibility to the cost of building it up, and of course whether or not it was feasible for the venue considered to house a superclub.”
The announcement by the superclub puts an end to months of speculation about where it would move when its lease expires at the end of 2015.
In June last year, Zouk launched the “Save Zouk” movement, after being informed that its Jiak Kim Street lease would not renewed after expiring in end-2015.
According to The Straits Times, “a series of 2015/2016 parties and farewell bashes” are currently being planned, including a “last anniversary party” celebrating Zouk’s silver jubilee in April 2016.
Zouk was founded in 1991, when a row of three derelict warehouses along the Singapore River was converted into Singapore’s first commercial dance club.
Over the years, the 40,000 sq ft superclub has brought in some of the best international music acts in the world, including Icelandic singer-songwriter Bjork and top DJs such as Paul Van Dyk, Tiesto, Hardwell and David Guetta.
