NEW YORK, Sept 27 — One of the 1980s’ iconic haircuts could be set for a fashionable return.
“Business in the front, party in the back” goes the famous saying, and whether it’s ‘80s hockey moms version, the radical Basque nationalist style, or the so-called ‘Ironic’ mullet of the early ‘00s, it’s been a popular (if occasionally difficult) chop to pull off over the years.
Now it looks like the fashion merry-go-round could well be bringing back the love-it-or-loathe-it classic once again. British model and Burberry star Edie Campbell lopped off her long brown tresses earlier this year and has been rocking a dyed black mullet hairstyle ever since, bagging campaigns for Jil Sander and Marc Jacobs (among others) in the process.
A sense of ironic detachment seems to be a key factor in wearing the trend. Backstage at New York Fashion Week Campbell was quizzed on her worst fashion industry-related beauty disaster and responded: “I’ve got a mullet, it can’t really get much worse,” reported Cosmopolitan.
Sandra Bullock also sports a black mullet-style haircut on the October cover of US Vogue, while fellow American Lindsey Wixson had her hair cut into a shaggy crop with plenty of length behind that has been a runway hit in New York and Milan this season. Never one to miss out on an emerging trend, Barbadian r’n’b singer Rihanna turned up at the Alexander Wang after-party at NYFW with a mullet hairstyle too.
So will we see a new wave of mullets hitting the high street, or is this all just a fashion-land fantasy? As usual, we’ll have to wait and see. — AFP Relaxnews
