SUBANG JAYA, Oct 22 — In SS15, Subang Jaya, you’ll find queues of people waiting to snap up delectable Indian snacks from this stall run by Suris A/L Krishnan, 40.

Previously a bodyguard cum driver, he first started selling his deep-fried goodies at a roadside stall in Sunway many years ago.

About 13 years ago, the authorities allocated him a space at the hawker lots along Jalan SS15/3B, right next to the popular rojak and cendol stalls.

From 11am onwards, especially on weekends, expect to wait in line for items like two types of vadai (masala and uluntu), curry puffs, banana balls, urundai (two types: green beans or tapioca), bawang goreng or pakoda, samosas, spring rolls, etc.

Every item is vegetarian since Suris and his wife are also vegetarians. Suris explains that his top bestsellers are the two variants of vadai and curry puffs.

Every day, preparation for these snacks start from 4am at Suris’ home under the close supervision of his wife. Work continues till 10am, just before the stall opens.

It’s tough deciding what to order here but we suggest that you go for their superb vadai. If you prefer a softer bite, go for the uluntu vadai that looks similar to a doughnut as it’s got a hole in the golden centre.

For a crunchier bite, go for their masala vadai.

This stall’s version is amazing as it combines a crisp bite followed by a fluffy and moist centre; one piece is never enough. For something crunchier, you can opt for the masala vadai that uses skinned ground chana dhal.

Ask for the slightly spicy chutney to dip your vadai into for additional flavour and grab some fiery whole green chillies to complete your unforgettable snack experience.

Other must-eats include their fried onion snacks or pakoda. The chopped onions with spices and curry leaves are lightly mixed together with a floury batter and deep fried till golden brown. Incredibly addictive stuff. Another crowd favourite is their simple steamed chick peas or kacang kuda which is prepared without any salt.

Customers here are mainly long-time regulars. For instance, Ju has been patronising the stall for 10 years. She tells us that it’s his uluntu vadai that she likes. The health-conscious woman goes the extra mile to slowly pan fry the vadai at home to render out any excess oil.

The stall also caters for any occasion from wedding receptions to open house celebrations. Every Sunday, they get an order from a nearby church for their snacks. The snacks are all priced at 60 sen each except the steamed chick peas which is available for RM1.50 per packet.

There’s also plenty of goodies at these row of stalls to whet your appetite. Aside from the ever-popular rojak and cendol stalls, there are also refreshing coconut water, kacang putih, fried snacks like keropok lekor and nasi lemak kukus.

The stall is sandwiched between the popular cendol and rojak stalls.

Next month, fans can look forward to the stall’s branch opening in the USJ10 Taipan area. Suris tells us the shop will be opposite CIMB Bank where his Indian snacks stall will be sharing the same premises with his rojak and cendol stalls neighbours here.
