GEORGE TOWN, Jan 17 — The Penang Pakatan Harapan (PH) have decided that June is the most suitable period to the state’s election, its chairman Chow Kon Yeow said today.
Chow, who is also Penang chief minister, said there is a very narrow window of time left to dissolve the state legislature to pave way for polls.
"Penang PH has met and discussed. We feel June is a suitable time to hold it. We feel that if we can announce early, to say that we are having it in June, then there is a certain time frame,” he told reporters here.
He said if the announcement for a June state election were made either this month or in February, it would allay public uncertainty on when it would be held.
"For us, whether it is May or June, it doesn’t matter, it is within the time frame. But in Penang, we are talking about June,” he said when asked to comment on fellow PH leader and Negri Sembilan Mentri Besar Datuk Seri Aminuddin Harun’s announcement that its state legislative assembly will likely dissolve in May.
Chow was also asked if Penang PH has held any discussions with Penang Barisan Nasional on possible collaboration to mirror the collaboration at the federal level.
He replied that the state chapter has yet to receive any instructions from its central leadership.
"The Penang PH meeting was held last Sunday in hopes that central PH has made decisions or any instructions to the state, but there was no decision so all we had were only general discussions,” he said.
He said that since there were no specific instructions, formally there would not be any PH-BN state collaboration at the moment.
Penang is among six states that did not hold concurrent elections during the 15th general election last November and must do so this year due to the expiry of their five-year mandate.
The other states under PH are Selangor and Negri Sembilan and the remaining three are PAS-held states Kelatan, Terengganu, and Kedah.
Penang’s mandate expires on August 2, followed by Selangor on August 26 and Negri Sembilan on September 2.
The Kelantan assembly’s five-year term will expire on June 9, followed by Terengganu on September 1 and Kedah on September 4.
