SINGAPORE, May 14 ― Singapore leaders have conveyed their condolences to Indonesian President Joko Widodo in the aftermath of deadly terror attacks at three churches in Surabaya over the weekend.
In a letter to Widodo yesterday, President Halimah Yacob said she was “deeply saddened” to learn about the bomb attacks.
“On behalf of the people in Singapore, I convey our deepest condolences to the victims and their families. I wish those injured a speedy recovery,” she added.
“Singapore strongly condemns such wanton attacks, which have led to the tragic loss of innocent lives and caused injuries to both civilians and the police. Our thoughts and prayers are with the people of Indonesia during this time of grief”.
Yesterday, a family of six launched suicide attacks on Christians attending Sunday services at three churches in Indonesia’s second-largest city of Surabaya, killing at least 13 people and wounding 40.
Indonesia, the world's largest Muslim-majority country, has seen a recent resurgence in homegrown militancy.
The police said the family who carried out yesterday's attacks were among 500 Islamic State sympathisers who had returned from Syria.
Prime Minister Lee Hsien Loong also wrote to Widodo and said he was “shocked and saddened by the news of the bomb attacks”.
The attacks claimed innocent lives and left many injured, he noted.
“On behalf of the Government of Singapore, I offer our deepest condolences to the bereaved families of the victims, and wish the injured a swift recovery,” said Lee.
He added that the Republic “strongly condemns such senseless and callous acts of violence against civilians at places of worship”.
Lee said he was confident that the Indonesian government will be able to deal with the situation decisively.
“Singapore stands ready to work with Indonesia to bring those responsible for such reprehensible acts of violence to justice,” the Prime Minister added.
“I am confident that the unity and resolve of the Indonesian people will not waver during this difficult time”. . — TODAY
