NEW YORK, May 23 — New York City has emerged as the US city with the highest number of top-rated hotels and restaurants, according to users of the world’s largest travel site.

In TripAdvisor’s latest listing, New York boasts more than twice the number of Certificate of Excellence awards compared to the next leading city, San Francisco: the Big Apple counts 1,678 hotels and restaurants versus 665.

The certificate is given out to hotels that consistently achieve outstanding traveller reviews. Businesses must maintain an overall rating of four out of five bubbles. The algorithm also takes into account the volume and date of reviews, a business’s tenure and popularity ranking.

This year alone, nearly 58,000 businesses in the US have been awarded.
