KUALA LUMPUR, Aug 25 — Malaysian hockey legend Sarjit Singh was laid to rest at the Shamshan Bhoomi Wake Hall, Jalan Loke Yew, here this afternoon.
The former national men’s hockey team captain and coach died on Sunday, Aug 23. He was 63.
His remains were brought from his residence in Subang Jaya at 9 am and arrived at the crematorium around 10 am.
A sombre mood enveloped the crematorium grounds as family members, including his wife Kulwant Kaur and their three sons and three daughters, and friends struggled to hold back their grief during the final rites.
Before the cremation ceremony, which took place around 1 pm, guests were allowed to pay their last respects to the former national player.
Among the hockey fraternity who paid their final respects were Mohamad Sukri Abdul Mutalib, Tengku Ahmad Tajudin Abdul Jalil, Maninderjit Singh and Baljit Singh.
Also present were Deputy Youth and Sports Minister Mordi Bimol, National Athletes Welfare Foundation (YAKEB) chairman Datuk Ahmad Shapawi Ismail, and Education and Skills Empowerment Foundation (YPPK) chairman Datuk Noorul Ariffin Abdul Majeed.
Sarjit represented Malaysia at two Olympic Games, Los Angeles 1984 and Barcelona 1992, and helped the national squad secure bronze medals at two Asian Games, in New Delhi 1982 and Beijing 1990.
After retiring, he transitioned into coaching, guiding the national team from 2007 to 2008 before being called upon once again to lead the squad from March 2024 until March 2026. — Bernama
