GLASGOW, July 29 — Muhammad Sharul Aimy came agonisingly close to ending Malaysia’s 20-year Commonwealth Games artistic gymnastics medal drought today but missed out on the bronze medal in the men’s vault final at Glasgow International Arena due to a tie-break.
He finished tied with Cyprus’ Neofytos Kyriakou on 13.733 points (pts) but was relegated to fourth under the competition’s tie-break rules as Kyriakou won by virtue of recording the higher score on either of the two vaults, posting 14.100 pts on his opening attempt compared with Sharul Aimy’s best of 13.833 pts on his second.
Canada’s Felix Dolci won the gold medal, while England’s Luke Whitehouse took silver.
Under the tie-break regulations, gymnasts tied on the same overall score are first separated by their highest individual vault score, followed by the highest execution and difficulty scores if required.
The narrow miss came after national gymnast Rachel Yeoh had fell short, finishing just 0.1 points behind the bronze medalist in the women’s floor exercise final.
The five-day artistic gymnastics competition concluded yesterday, with Malaysia ending its campaign without a medal.
The last time Malaysia won an artistic gymnastics medal at the Commonwealth Games was when Ng Shu Wai claimed silver in the men’s floor exercise in Melbourne, Australia in 2006, after having won the silver in the same event in 2002. — Bernama
