GLASGOW, July 27 — National weightlifter Muhamad Aznil Bidin clinched his third consecutive Commonwealth Games gold medal in style after winning the men’s 65 kilogrammes (kg) category at the 2026 Commonwealth Games here today.
Competing at the Scottish Event Campus (SEC) Armadillo, Muhamad Aznil lifted a total of 299 kg, — 133 kg in the snatch and 166 kg in the clean and jerk — setting three new Games records in the process.
The 32-year-old began with a successful 130 kg lift in the snatch, then a 133 kg lift on his second attempt but was unsuccessful in lifting 135 kg, while in the clean and jerk, he successfully lifted 162 kg and then 166 kg in his first two attempts, but failed to clear 170 kg in his third try.
Muhamad Aznil beat silver medalist Raja Muthupandi of India, who lifted 286 kg and bronze medalist Morea Baru of Papua New Guinea, who lifted 282 kg.
Muhamad Aznil’s win today makes him the first Malaysian weightlifter to win three consecutive Commonwealth Games gold medals, surpassing the two gold medals former national weightlifter Amirul Hamizan Ibrahim won in 2002 and 2010.
His gold medal today is Malaysia’s second of the Games, following Mohamad Aniq Kasdan’s victory in the men’s 60 kg category earlier.
Fellow teammate, women’s weightlifter Irene Jane Henry also won a bronze medal in the women’s 48 kg category today, bringing Malaysia’s current medal haul to two gold and two bronze medals.
Powerlifter Bonnie Bunyau Gustin contributed Malaysia’s first medal of the Glasgow Games, a bronze in the men’s lightweight event, on Friday (July 24). — Bernama
