KUALA LUMPUR, Feb 14 — Malaysia’s top golfer Gavin Kyle Green has one mission when he competes in the Malaysian Golf Open at the Mines Resort and Golf Club in Seri Kembangan near here beginning tomorrow, which is to do his best and qualify for the prestigious British Open 2024.

The 30-year-old said although the Malaysia Open is held on his home soil, he will still give his best as it’s not a guarantee to secure the top three spots in order to play in the world’s oldest golf tournament which will be held from July 18 to 21 at the Royal Troon Golf Club in Scotland.

“Even this on home soil... everyone has the potential to get those three spots. I’m focusing to get a spot if it works well, who knows what is going to be happen on Sunday (final),” he told media when met here today.

Gavin, who is leading a field of 30 local players in the tournament said he also has a very good plan to excel in the tournament and qualify for the British Open.

Meanwhile, when asked whether he had a chance to emerge as the Malaysian Open champion, he said everyone will have a chance to be on the podium.

“Chances! I think every Malaysian has a chance. Its just how they execute and finish the job, that’s the hardest part. If u play well and somebody plays better, you can’t do much about it,” he said.

From the inception of the first Malaysian Open in 1962, no Malaysian has won the event.

The late P. Gunasegaran is the only local pro who came close to victory, but finished joint runner-up following a three-way playoff which was won by Sweden’s Joakim Haeggman in 1994. — Bernama
