BANGKOK, Aug 8 — Malaysia ended a 31 year drought after beating Sri Lanka 41-31 to win the Asian Netball Championship in the final at Chanthanayingyong Gymnasium yesterday.

Netball Association of Malaysia president Datuk Suraya Yaacob said the players put up a much better display today compared to the semi-final match yesterday.

“They played much better than in the semi-final match against Hong Kong and that’s what brought us success after 31 years,” he told Bernama yesterday.

Malaysia scraped past Hong Kong 35-34 in a thrilling semi-final match. In the final, the Malaysian players showed neat movement and great teamwork to easily beat favourites Sri Lanka.

Malaysia led Sri Lanka from start to finish of the final match.

Meanwhile, the head of Malaysia’s netball team, Zainon Md Noh said what distinguished yesterday’s match was the great cooperation among the national players.

“The great team work was the recipe of our success in final match against Sri Lanka today (Sunday),”   she added.
