KUALA LUMPUR, March 8 — Harimau Muda C (national U-19 squad) former captain Dominic Tan Jun Jin is among 31 players listed by national Under- 22 (U-22) squad chief coach Frank Bernhardt for centralised training at Wisma FAM from March 14.
In a statement, FAM announced that other than Tan, now with Johor Darul Ta’zim II (JDT II), Bernhardt also listed 30 other players, the majority of whom are news faces. Among them are UiTM FC player, Mohd Adib Zainuddin and Sarawak player, Rodney Calvin Akwensive other than former players of Harimau Muda B (U-21) and Harimau Muda C.
Seven other players were told to be ready to join the 2017 Sea Games Project squad training to replace any of the players named were injured.
They are Kelantan player Ahmad Syihan Hazmi Mohamed, Muhammad Zulkhairi Zulkeply (UiTM FC), Muhammad Irfan Zakaria (Kuala Lumpur), Muhammad Mohd Faudzi and Muhammad Zuasyraf Zulkiefli (T-Team), Muhammad Syazwan Andik Mohd Ishak (JDT II) and Muhamad Hafiy Haikal Ismail (JDT II). The national U-22 squad, also known as the 2017 Sea Games Project squad, is set to be tested in two friendlies against the Philippines’ U-22 squad on March 23 and the Nepalese national team four days later, both at the Tuanku Abdul Rahman Stadium in Paroi, Seremban.
Bernhardt said he agreed to give a chance to new faces to join the centralised training after they exhibited excellent performances with their respective teams especially in the President Cup action (U-21).
“Although the President Cup has just started, we have identified several players with the skills needed by the team from the list of those selected in the selection training session in January,” he said.
Bernhardt said the services of Pahang player Matthew Davies depended on Harimau Malaysia (national squad) chief coach, whether he wanted to use the player to join the senior squad.
Over the two friendlies, the German-born coach hoped he could find the team’s first 11 other than testing the players in different positions.
