KUALA LUMPUR, Aug 9 — The presence of about 250,000 motorsports fans proved that the organisation of the Kuala Lumpur City Grand Prix (KL GP) was a huge success.
Kuala Lumpur Mayor, Datuk Mhd Amin Nordin said the open-mindedness of the fans, especially the locals, made KL GP comparable to similar races in other countries.
“The Monaco Grand Prix and Singapore Grand Prix are examples of world-class races as they have their own group of fans, starting with the locals,” he told Bernama, here, today.
Despite some problems over the past three days, the organisers worked hard to ensure that the race could proceed according to the programme.
Mhd Amin said KL GP 2016 would be aggressively promoted and the weaknesses encountered this year would be overcome.
Bernama observed that fans were excited about the prestigious race and some even came to Kuala Lumpur from abroad just to catch the race.
Brian Zammitt, 46, who came here for business from Australia, said the experience of watching the race was great as he is a fan of motorsports.
“I think this is unbelievable and spectacular. Actually, I planned to return to Sydney tomorrow night but now I plan to stay for one more week,” he said.
Zammitt’s daughter, Natalie, 19, arrived from Sydney three hours before the race after being notified by her father.
“I have never seen this kind of race. It is better than I expected. I am not really into cars but watching the race made me feel so excited. I am thinking of coming back next year (for KL GP),” she said.
Local fan, Hasri Abdullah, 28, said the race was worth watching, considering the quality of performance exhibited by the drivers.
“I felt like watching the movie, “2 Fast 2 Furious”. And although I do not usually take public transport, I took the train to get here,” he said.
KL GP featured GT car races such as Lamborghini Super Cup, Formula Masters, Porsche Carrera Cup and Audi R8 LMS Cup, in addition to demonstrations by five best V8 supercar teams.— Bernama
