PALEMBANG, Dec 15 — The national ping pong team won a silver and a bronze medal in the women and men’s team events at the 17th Asean University Games (AUG) here.
At the final match of the women’s team, Vietnam beat Malaysia easily 3-0 after Vietnamese singles player, Ruyen Thiniet beat national singles player Rou You 11-5 11-4, 6-11, 11-8 at Universiti Sriwijaya.
Subsequently, Malaysia’s second singles, Kueh Wan Way who faced Ai Hoang My Trang also failed to contribute points after losing easily 0-3. Wan Way lost 5-11, 10-12, 7-11.
The combination of Ho Ying-Lee Roo You, who was expected to be able to give a stiff fight, lost to an energetic play by An Hoang Tuang-Ruyen Thiniet.
They lost 6-11, 9-11, 7-11, a 0-3, which saw Malaysia losing and Vietnam winning the gold medal.
The bronze medal was shared by Thailand and Indonesia.
The men’s team only reaped a bronze medal after losing to the host team.
Indonesia won its first point via Gilang who beat Ashraf Haiqal 11-8, 7-11, 11-3, 12-10. Dony contributed the second medal after recording a win against Poh Zheng Lin 11-6, 12-10, 11-5.
Meanwhile, the pair of Rocky and Dony ensured the final slot was Indonsia’s with an easy win over Poon Soon Cheong-Ashraf Haiqal 11-4, 11-5, 13-11.
