KUALA LUMPUR, Sept 29 — The Malaysian Meteorological Department (MetMalaysia) has issued a thunderstorm warning for several states in Peninsular Malaysia and Sarawak, with thunderstorms, heavy rain and strong winds expected until 7pm today.
In Peninsular Malaysia, the warning covers Penang, Perak and Melaka, as well as parts of five other states.
In Kedah, the affected districts are Pokok Sena, Kota Setar, Padang Terap, Pendang, Yan, Kuala Muda, Kulim, Bandar Baharu, Sik and Baling. In Pahang, they are Bera, Rompin, Kuantan, Maran and Jerantut.
In Selangor, Klang and Kuala Langat are affected, while in Negeri Sembilan the warning covers Tampin and Jempol. In Johor, the districts are Segamat, Tangkak, Muar, Pontian and Batu Pahat.
In Sarawak, the warning covers Sri Aman, Betong, Sarikei (Sarikei and Maradong), Sibu (Sibu), Samarahan (Sebuyau) and Kapit (Song).
MetMalaysia said a warning is issued when there are signs that thunderstorms with rainfall intensity exceeding 20mm per hour are imminent, or are expected to last for more than an hour.
A thunderstorm warning is a short-term alert and is valid for no more than six hours for each issuance, the department said.
