JOHOR BAHRU, April 2 — Police will seek to extend the remand order for three family members, including a teenager, arrested for allegedly disseminating TikTok content that insulted Islam and the Johor royal institution.
Johor police chief Datuk Ab Rahaman Arsad said the current remand for the two women and one man, aged between 17 and 49, ends tomorrow.
“So far we have received up to three police reports in Johor regarding this case,” he told reporters at the Johor police contingent headquarters here today.
He said an extension of three to four days is needed to complete the investigation, which is based on at least three police reports lodged in the state.
The trio was arrested at a house in Taman Saujana on Tuesday following a police report about a video uploaded last Sunday.
The video, from the TikTok account ‘ratunurputribalqis’, allegedly contained defamatory statements, including a claim that one of the suspects was a teacher to His Majesty Sultan Ibrahim, the King of Malaysia.
Ab Rahaman revealed that the male suspect is the brother of the adult woman, and the 17-year-old girl is her daughter.
He added that the teenager is not currently employed or attending school, and the group's TikTok account had no followers.
Regarding the suspects' mental state, he said police have not yet been able to determine their status.
"After the investigation is complete, we will await a court order on whether they need to be referred to a hospital’s psychiatric department for evaluation," he said.
In addition to the police probe, the Johor Islamic Religious Department (JAINJ) is conducting a separate investigation.
The case is being investigated under multiple laws, including Section 4(1) of the Sedition Act 1948, Section 233 of the Communications and Multimedia Act 1998, and Sections 298 and 500 of the Penal Code.
