KUALA LUMPUR, May 13 — While pledging support for press freedom, the prime minister said the Anti-Fake News Act 2018 will be properly defined so that everyone is clear on what news is factual and otherwise.
“In the past, there have been obstructions in reporting news. We will not obstruct media organisations as long as they report with basis.
“Any efforts to instigate the people and cause chaos in Malaysia will not be allowed. However, they are free to report even though their reports may not be agreeable to the government,” Prime Minister Tun Dr Mahathir Mohamad said in a “live” broadcast on RTM1.
“We will have a better definition of ‘fake news’ so the public and media companies will understand the difference between real and fake.
“Although we support the concept of press freedom and freedom of speech, these come with limits and if anyone purposely tries to cause chaos, they will be hit with specific laws to curtail those acts,” he explained.
