KUCHING, Feb 10 — Fine weather is helping the floods in the affected areas of Sarawak to recede faster, thus enabling the evacuees to return to their homes in batches.

As of 8am today, the number of evacuees at the 14 relief centres in six divisions had dropped to 3,092 from the 3,173 last night, according to the Sarawak Disaster Management Committee.

It said in a statement that four of the relief centres were in the Sibu division, three each in Serian and Bintulu, two in Mukah and one each in Sarikei and Limbang.

“Bintulu has the highest number of evacuees, 1,183 from 320 families, followed by Sibu, with 1,086 from 354 families,” it added.

Forty-eight schools were closed due to the floods.

The committee expects more evacuees to return to their homes today due to the fine weather. — Bernama
