KANGAR, Jan 31 — The arrest of a high-ranking senior official of the Perlis Drainage and Irrigation Department (DID) for alleged abuse of power and corruption will not jeopardise the Timah Tasoh West Flood Diversion Project, said Perlis Mentri Besar Datuk Seri Azlan Man.
He said the project to raise the embankment of the Timah Tasoh Dam to reduce the incidence of floods was progressing unimpeded and was also being monitored by the department headquarters in Kuala Lumpur.
The official is being held on remand for seven days, along with two other people, to assist in the investigation by the Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission.
“I am not sure if the investigation is associated with the project. It is best that I do not comment. I leave it to the MACC to conduct the investigation,” Azlan said to reporters when approached at the ‘Sentuhan Jualan Rakyat’ (People’s Outreach Sale) organised by the Kangar Umno Division here.
He also said that the state government had approved a 20 per cent reduction in seven categories of licences for small traders effective tomorrow.
The reduction was proposed in the 2018 Perlis Budget to encourage more young people to participate in business, he said. — Bernama
