KUALA LUMPUR, Jan 29 — Some currency exchanges here may face shortages of foreign notes after RM8 million in cash was stolen.

According to The Star newspaper today, an industry source revealed that a worker with a distribution agency allegedly made off with the notes meant for several money changers in the city.

Bukit Aman’s Commercial Crime Investigation Department director Comm Datuk Amar Singh confirmed the case with the news outlet.

“I can’t reveal any details at the moment but I can confirm that we are investigating,” he was quoted as saying.

Citing sources, the newspaper said the theft may have been an inside job involving several people.

“There is a major internal investigation into how this could have happened,” a source told the paper.

No shortages have yet been reported, the paper said.

Although one outlet said it ran out of 15 of the 20 currencies it carried, the operator this was not unusual during the weekends.
