SINGAPORE, Nov 18 — More than 6,450 cartons of duty-unpaid cigarettes were seized yesterday at Tuas Checkpoint, the Immigrations & Checkpoints Authority (ICA) said today.
According to the ICA, its officers had directed the Malaysia-registered truck for inspection upon its arrival at the checkpoint around 9am.
The truck, which was driven by a 46-year-old Malaysian man, was carrying a consignment declared to contain 20 pallets of paper boxes. However, ICA officers instead found 6,454 cartons and 460 packets of duty-unpaid cigarettes hidden among the consignment.
The ICA added the potential duty and Goods and Services Tax evaded amounted to about S$504,400 (RM1.56 million) and S$50,780, respectively.
The driver, cargo and truck were handed over to Singapore Customs for investigations. — TODAY
