KUALA LUMPUR, Nov 11 — The Kelantan Forestry Department has warned an Orang Asli tribe to dismantle a months-old logging blockade near Gua Musang or face prosecution.
According to The Star newspaper, the department issued the notice to the Temiar tribe, giving them two weeks or until November 20 to remove the makeshift barriers.
The department told the tribe members that they face up to five years’ prison time or maximum fines of RM5,000 if they are convicted under Section 32 of the National Forestry Act 1984 (Amendment 1993).
The Star reported the department’s notice not only directed the Orang Asli to vacate the particular blockade, but “any permanent forest reserve in Kelantan without the authorisation of the Kelantan Forestry Department”.
“The Kelantan Forestry Department is not responsible for any damage or loss of property while the demolition operations take place and no reparation will be paid,” the note said.
The Orang Asli erected the blockade after authorities ignore their complaints that uncontrolled logging and land clearing in the area were causing erosion and harming their livelihoods.
