TELUK INTAN, Oct 27 — Twenty-year-old K. Logeswaran went to Singapore hoping to earn enough as a cleaner to support his family. Such was his love for his family.

But after just 13 days in the republic, Logeswaran was involved in a road accident in Tampoi, Johor, which left him with a fractured neck. He was in the back seat of a car on his way back to Singapore with his friends after a short trip home.

He was admitted in the Intensive Care Unit (ICU) of the Sultanah Aminah Hospital in Johor Baru last Saturday.

On Tuesday, the world fell apart for Logeswaran’s family when he became the youngest among the six ICU patients who perished in the fire at the hospital.

His mother, K Nageswary, 49, was beside herself with grief when met at their house at Ladang Rubana, an estate on the way to Hutan Melintang.

In between tears, she kept saying Logeswaran, her third child among four, was a good boy.

“The last time I saw my son was on Monday night at the hospital. He was in a critical condition and could not talk, but he responded to my questions by blinking his eyes,” the estate worker said.

“He is a very caring person. He wanted to help support us. That is why he went to Singapore.”

When she was told of the fire which broke out at about 9am, Nageswary and her older son Sethupathy, 23, rushed to Johor.

Sethupathy recalled it was chaos when they arrived at the hospital.

“We wanted to go inside the hospital, but were stopped by hospital security,” he said.

“We only found out from hospital officials at about 1pm that my brother was gone.”

Nageswary said they had wanted Logeswaran to be closer to home so it would be easier to be with him.

“We wanted to transfer him back to Teluk Intan Hospital for treatment, but our request was denied by doctors as his condition was unstable,” she said.

“They told us to wait for a week before deciding what to do.”

Logeswaran’s sister, Vikneswary, 26, demanded anwers for their loss.

“We don’t know what happened at the hospital. All we know is my brother is dead. We have the right to know the truth,” she said.

Logeswaran’s father Krishnasamy refused to speak to the press.

Logeswaran was cremated at Tanah Perkuburan India Ladang Rubana at 2pm.

Scenes of anguish and sadness were repeated in three other locations in Johor and Negri Sembilan as the other victims were laid to rest.

Yusuf Hasan, 53, was buried in Batu Pahat, M. Kaliama, 23, in Kangkar Pulai, Johor, and C. Neeramaladevi, 24, was buried in Bahau, Negri Sembilan.

The funeral of Tow Ah Wah, 60, will be held on Saturday.

In Tampoi, a wake is being held for Choo Lin Fong, 37.
