KUALA KANGSAR, June 9 — The social media campaign conducted by the Umno Information Technology Bureau is not aimed at spreading lies, but to tell the truth on matters to the public.

”We are not liars in cyber space,” said bureau chairman, Datuk Ahmad Maslan.

On the various slanderous claims made on the social media against Barisan Nasional (BN) candidate Datin Mastura Mohd Yazid in the campaign for the upcoming Kuala Kangsar by-election, he said those involved were unethical.

“We should be campaigning in a courteous manner and tell the truth, not lying.

“More so in this holy month of Ramadan, we should not be spreading false news or exaggerated stories to garner votes,” he told reporters after chairing a special meeting of the Umno Information Technology Bureau at Sungai Perak Safari Resort, here, today.

BN has embarked on its social media campaign through Facebook, WhatsApp, Telegram and Twitter applications for the Kuala Kangsar and Sungai Besar parliamentary seat by-elections.

This campaign targets young voters in both constituencies.

“While campaigning, the good and truth should be told, and disseminating the truth to the people should suffice to win their hearts,” Ahmad said.

Based on the response to the bureau’s campaign on social media, he said the bureau had been receiving positive response from the target group.

The Kuala Kangsar and Sungai Besar by-elections will be held on June 18 following the death of the incumbents, Datuk Wan Mohammad Khair-il Anuar Wan Ahmad and Tan Sri Noriah Kasnon, in a helicopter crash in Sebuyau, Sarawak on May 5.

The Kuala Kangsar by-election will see a four-cornered fight involving BN, PAS, Amanah and an independent, while Sungai Besar will see a three-cornered contest involving BN, PAS and Amanah. — Bernama
