KUALA LUMPUR, March 23 — A man was sentenced to 23 years imprisonment and 14 strokes of the cane by two separate Sessions Courts today after pleading guilty to seven charges of fraud involving losses amounting to RM187,500, two years ago.

The accused, V. Vicknes, 33, pleaded guilty to four charges of deceiving Datuk Tan Poh Loong, 49, before Judge Zaman Mohd Noor, and the court sentenced him to three years and six months jail and two strokes of the rotan for each charge.

However, the accused will only have to serve three years and six months after the court ordered the sentences to run concurrently from the date of his arrest on Dec 14 2015.

Before Judge Azman Ahmad, Vicknes pleaded guilty to three charges of deceiving S. Vimala, 68, and the court sentenced him to three years jail and two strokes of the rotan for each charge.

The sentences were also ordered to concurrently from Feb 2, 2016, the date when he was first charged.

On the first four charges, Vicknes was accused of deceiving Tan that he could obtain the ‘Datuk Seri’ title for him on the birthday of the Yang Di-Pertuan Agong in 2014, and induced the victim to hand over cash in stages into three different bank accounts of the accused amounting to RM95,000.

Vicknes was accused of committing the offences at Maybank Berhad and Hong Leong Bank, in Cheras, and Citibank Berhad, in Jalan Ampang, here between Feb 28 and April 1 2014.

As for the three other charges, Vicknes was accused of defrauding Vimala in a sale and purchase of a 2013 BMW which induced the woman to hand over cash in stages to the accused totalling RM92,500.

He was charged with committing the offences at the ground floor and first floor of Jalan Solaris 1, Mont Kiara, here at 3.30pm, June 30 2014, 1.55pm on July 2, 2014 and at 1.27pm on July 21, 2014.

Deputy public prosecutor Faridah Nurdinie Bahrum appeared for the prosecution while the accused was unrepresented. — Bernama
