KUALA LUMPUR, March 22 — PKR de facto leader Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim withdrew today his RM60 million lawsuit against Datuk Seri S Nallakaruppan after the senator denied making the reported allegations that formed the basis of the defamation case.
Acting as his own counsel, Anwar today told the Kuala Lumpur High Court he would withdraw the suit without conditions.
Under cross-examination earlier, Nallakaruppan said that he never said Anwar took RM60 million from a gambling corporation as reported by Malay daily Sinar Harian during the 2008 Permatang Pauh by-election and blamed it on the media “twisting words”.
The whole court battle, which took seven years to get to trial, was for Anwar to vindicate his denials of allegations against him, the PKR leader’s lawyer Latheefa Koya said.
Another member of Anwar’s legal team and Padang Serai MP N. Surendran dubbed the resolution a “resounding victory” for the former Permatang Pauh MP.
“He has always maintained that all these allegations regarding the RM60 million were false and were lies.
“Now Nallakaruppan himself has denied and Anwar has been vindicated,” Surendran said.
Nallakaruppan and his lawyer, Tan Sri Shafee Abdullah said they were “happy” with the matter being resolved.
