KUALA LUMPUR, Oct 26 — A 33-year-old Chinese national who was arrested in connection with a stripping incident on one of the islands off the east coast town of Semporna, Sabah, has been released on police bail.
English daily The Star quoted Semporna police chief Supt Peter Umbuas as saying that the man was released after they were unable to apply for a remand extension of remand. The earlier order expired yesterday.
The tour guide, who is also a dive instructor, has been released on police bail with two local sureties and will be called back whenever necessary, he said.
Peter added that it was too early to determine if the man can be charged in court as his early release had rendered the investigation incomplete.
Police arrested the Chinese national after receiving complaints about several photos that were circulated on social media showing several people in the buff showing their backs to the camera as they stood in shallow waters of a beach.
Other photos showed five men posing nude in a similar setting.
Earlier this year, a group of 10 tourists irked locals by stripping naked on Mount Kinabalu, considered a sacred place. On June 12, four of tourists aged between 22 and 24 — of Canadian, Dutch and British nationality — were convicted and sentenced to three days’ jail and fined RM5,000 each.
