PUTRAJAYA, Oct 21 — The Health Ministry said outdoor functions or activities must be avoided if the Air Pollutant Index (API) readings exceeds the unhealthy level of 100.

Health director-general Datuk Dr Noor Hisham Abdullah said events planned before the haze hit should be postponed or cancelled until the API improved.

“Shift to indoors, if they must still be held,” he said in a statement here, today.

He said the public must take preventive measures including reducing outdoor activities and wear suitable masks if venturing out, to protect their health.

They should drink at least eight glasses of water daily and wash their hands and face with soap and water after outdoor activities, he added.

Those who have cough, running nose, asthma, eye ailments and lung infection should promptly go to the clinic if their conditions worsened, he said.

Preventive measures to reduce the effect of the haze on health could be obtained at the Health Ministry website at www.infosihat.gov.my or www.moh.gov.my, he said.

According to the portal of the Department of Environment, 31 areas recorded unhealthy API readings as of 2 pm today, while Shah Alam recorded a very unhealthy API at 225. — Bernama
