KUALA LUMPUR, Sept 15 — The abduction of deputy public prosecutor  Kevin Morais was firmly established after closed-circuit television (CCTV) footage of highways leading out of the city and private premises showed another vehicle had blocked his car before he was taken away.

Inspector-General of Police Tan Sri Khalid Abu Bakar told a press conference here yesterday that police obtained a number of other clues and leads, and hoped to solve the case in the near future.

Fifteen statements from friends and family have been recorded.

“Police are still investigating the motive behind the abduction, and a burnt car found in an oil palm plantation in Hutan Melintang — allegedly linked to Morais’ disappearance two days after he went missing,” he said, adding that they are in the process of determining the vehicle make and model, and its registered owner.

Morais was last seen leaving his condominium at Menara Duta 1, Dutamas, Segambut, in a grey Proton Perdana on Sept 4.

Following the discovery of the burnt car, police studied CCTV footage taken from the North-South highway and toll plazas at Bidor, Tapah, Sungkai, Sabak Bernam and Selangor exits heading towards Hutan Melintang in Perak.

Police are also on the hunt for a group of people who sped into Kampung Sungai Samak in large cars several hours before the torched car was found.

The presence of such cars was related by workers at the plantation, who said the vehicles were speeding at about 100km/h, honking and flashing their high beam lights shortly before an explosion was heard between 1am and 2am.

The unidentified group is believed to have knowledge of the plantation based on the manner in which they sped in and out of the unpaved and unlit dirt tracks.

Police also said the disposal of the car was meticulously planned as the vehicle chassis and engine numbers were filed off.
