KUALA LUMPUR, Aug 28 — The Special Tactical Intelligence Narcotics Group (Sting) lived up to its namesake when it ‘stung’ an international drug trafficking syndicate operated by Nigerians early today.
The Sting dragnet saw the arrest of three Nigerians and a local in three separate raids in the Klang Valley.
In the 10-hour operation beginning 2am, a team of Sting personnel seized 58 compressed slabs of ganja worth about RM500,000.
Bukit Aman Narcotics Criminal Investigation Department deputy director Datuk Mohd Dzuraidi Ibrahim said initial investigations revealed the suspects had been operating for the past six months and the seized ganja weighing 56kg was to have been marketed in the Klang Valley.
“The group obtained the ganja from a neighbouring country and we believe the local man was the ‘drug mule’ hired to bring in the supplies from the border to Kuala Lumpur,” he added.
He said in the first raid, the police team nabbed three Nigerians at a house in Cheras.
Following interrogation of the suspects aged between 24 and 34, he said the police conducted a second raid that led to the seizure of the drug stored in the trunk of a car parked at an apartment unit in Puchong.
“In the third raid, we detained the 49-year-old local man in Sungai Way to facilitate investigations,” Mohd Dzuraidi told reporters at the federal police headquarters in Bukit Aman here.
He said two of the Nigerians had expired travel documents while the third had none.
He said the suspects were remanded to facilitate investigations into international drug trafficking.
Meanwhile, Mohd Dzuraidi said from January to Aug 26 this year, a total of 346 foreigners were arrested for drug trafficking. — Bernama
