KUALA LUMPUR, Aug 18 — Inspector-General of Police (IGP) Tan Sri Khalid Abu Bakar should keep his men focussed solely on fighting crime instead of wasting resources on investigating political conspiracies like the anti-PM plot revealed last weekend by Deputy Prime Minister Datuk Seri Ahmad Zahid Hamidi, Lim Kit Siang said.
Although the IGP confirmed yesterday to receiving three reports over the purported conspiracy to unseat Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Razak, Lim pointed out that no offence has been disclosed so far.
He noted that the IGP had said the matter would be investigated under Section 124B of the Penal Code on “activities detrimental to parliamentary democracy” but told the national police chief that this makes little sense.
“Firstly, can Khalid explain what offence had been disclosed by the so-called three police reports based on Zahid’s claim that there is a campaign to topple the government?” he asked.
Section 124B, he pointed out, is only relevant in cases where there are elements or “violent or unconstitutional” means to topple an elected government.
“It is an open-and-shut case if the complainants could not disclose any ‘violent or unconstitutional means’ employed in any campaign to topple the government, and the three who lodged police reports under this section should be prosecuted for lodging false police reports,” the DAP adviser said.
During the weekend, Zahid, who is deputy prime minister, had identified a senior Umno member as the individual behind the claimed plot to remove the prime minister using statutory declarations to approximate a vote of no confidence.
Opposition MPs have since denied awareness of such a conspiracy.
