KUALA LUMPUR, Aug 10 — Three Chinese traders involved in the brawl at Low Yat Plaza last month were today issued RM1,800 fines each by a magistrate’s court here.
Low Leong Seng, 28, Eric Chan Weng, 23 and Soo Weng Hing, 25, were charged with causing injury on Shahrul Anuar Abdul Aziz, 22, on July 11, on the ground floor of the popular tech mall.
After the suspects pleaded guilty, magistrate Muhamad Faizal Ismail meted out a fine of RM1,800 each to the trio, in default two months’ jail, under Section 323 of the Penal Code.
The maximum fine under the section is RM2,500 or one year of jail, or both.
Shahrul had on July 14 claimed trial to stealing a smartphone costing RM800.
The 22-year-old pleaded not guilty at a magistrate’s court to the offence punishable under Section 380 of the Penal Code.
If convicted, he faces a maximum 10-year jail term and a fine, with subsequent offences punishable by imprisonment and fine or whipping.
Following Shahrul’s arrest on July 11, his friends returned on the same day and attacked a mobile phone store, assaulting workers and causing an estimated RM70,000 in damages.
Rumours were circulated then claiming that he was cheated into buying a counterfeit product by a Chinese vendor.
The altercation led to a mob gathering the following day, which later devolved into riots that left five people injured and led to two dozen arrests.
