KUALA LUMPUR, June 11—The UK’s Foreign Office will review the existing travel information for its citizens travelling to Malaysia, following the arrest a Briton in Sabah for taking nude photographs on Mount Kinabalu.
Eleanor Hawkins, 24, is among four foreign tourists being remanded in Kota Kinabalu for investigations into the May 30 incident in which a group of 10 Westerners removed their clothes and posed for photographs on the peak of the mountain sacred to natives.
“The travel advice team are going to discuss with the Malaysian desk how best they think the travel advice should be updated in light of this incident.
“They are going to review it … they may include [reference to] it as a warning so that it doesn’t happen again,” the UK Foreign Office said in a statement to British daily The Guardian.
On its page about Malaysia, the British agency has an advisory warning its citizens to avoid nonessential travel to all islands off the coast of eastern Sabah from Kudat to Tawau, citing the recent abductions there.
It also included a note about last week’s magnitude 5.9 earthquake that killed 18 people in Sabah, which some native leaders have blamed on Hawkins and her companions.
The others detained are Canadian siblings Lindsey, 23 and Danielle Peterson, 22, and Dutch national Dylan Snel, 23.
The four are being investigated under Section 294(a) of the Penal code for public indecency, an offence that is punishable by a maximum three months’ jail term or fine or both.
